Plaid Hat Pattern
Make plaid hats for the whole family!
Plaid seems to be a classic fabric pattern for fall and winter. Whether it’s on a pair of soft flannel pajamas or a cozy beanie, these little squares have stood the test of time. An easy begin ning crochet pattern, this hat is worked flat and then sewn up the sides and top. The sizes given can easily be adapted for a longer or shorter hat. I have included tips on switching the colors as well as estimated yardage for each color and hat size. Would you rather have a 2 toned check or a kaleidoscope of colors? As al ways, I encourage you to be creative, so feel free to work as little or as many colors into your plaid masterpieces as you wish.

Materials:
130-220 Yards worsted weight yarn Size H(5 mm) and Size I(5.5 mm) crochet hooks Tapestry needle for weaving in ends
Estimated Yardage:
Toddler: Color A:55 Color B:55 Color C:25
Child: Color A:60 Color B:60 Color C:30
Small Adult: Color A:75 Color B:80 Color C:40
Large Adult: Color A:80 Color B:90 Color C:45
Gauge:
16 stitches/12 rows = 4 inches in pattern with large hook
Finished Size:
Toddler: 15 inch circumference/8 inch height
Child: 17 inch circumference/8 inch height Abbreviations:
Sm Adult: 19 inch circumference/9.5 inch height
Lg Adult: 21 inch circumference/9.5 inch height

DC: Double Crochet

Instructions:
Instructions written as Toddler (Child, Small Adult, Large Adult)
Brim:
1. With small hook and Color A, CH 8(8, 10, 10). SC in 2nd chain from hook and SC across the remaining stitches. CH 1. Turn. (7(7, 9, 9) sts)
2. SCBLO across the row. CH 1. Turn. (7(7, 9, 9)sts)
Repeat step 2 until you have 56(64, 72, 80) rows.
Body:
Switch to large hook. Keep working with Color A.
Foundation row: Rotate work so the long edge of ribbing is at the top. SC into the end of each row of ribbing.
CH 1. Turn. (56(64, 72, 80) sts)
First Block Set (Colors A and B)
Row 1: With Color A, SC, DC, SC, DC. Switch to Color B. With Color B, SC, DC, SC, DC. Continue working across the row switching the colors every 4 stitches. You will end with a DC and Color B. CH 1. Turn. (56(64, 72, 80) sts)
Row 2: With Color B, SC, DC, SC, DC. Switch to Color A. With Color A, SC, DC, SC, DC. Continue working across the row switching the colors every 4 stitches. You will end with a DC and Color A. CH 1. Turn. (56(64, 72, 80) sts)
Row 3: With Color A, SC, DC, SC, DC. Switch to Color B.
With Color B, SC, DC, SC, DC. Continue working across the row switching the colors every 4 stitches. You will end with a DC and Color B. CH 1. Turn. (56(64, 72, 80) sts)
Second Block Set (Colors B and C)
Row 1: With Color C, SC, DC, SC, DC. Switch to Color B. With Color B, SC, DC, SC, DC. Continue working across the row switching the colors every 4 stitches. You will end with a DC and Color B. CH 1. Turn. (56(64, 72, 80) sts)
Row 2: With Color B, SC, DC, SC, DC. Switch to Color C. With Color C, SC, DC, SC, DC. Continue working across the row switching the colors every 4 stitches. You will end with a DC and Color C. CH 1. Turn. (56(64, 72, 80) sts)
Row 3: With Color C, SC, DC, SC, DC. Switch to Color B. With Color B, SC, DC, SC, DC. Continue working across the row switching the colors every 4 stitches. You will end with a DC and Color B. CH 1. Turn. (56(64, 72, 80) sts)
Alternate the first and second block sets until you have 7(7, 8, 8) rows of blocks or 21(21, 24, 24) total rows.
Note: If a longer hat is desired, more block sets can be added.
Measure 2 feet of yarn, cut and pull through the final loop. Save this for sewing the top of the hat.
Finishing:
Using a long piece of yarn (2-3 feet) and a tapestry needle, stitch the two row edges to sew the hat together. Be sure to align the rows and stitches as you go.
Using the long piece of yarn from the last hat body stitch, weave the yarn through the top of the last row of stitches. Pull the fabric gently as you weave a few inches at a time to cinch the fabric close. Be sure not to pull the yarn too hard as it may break. Secure the yarn by making a few knots. Weave in all loose ends, block and attach a pompom if desired.
