Alien Applique / Granny Square
These aliens are out of this world!
The tutorial for these aliens includes both the applique and instructions on turning it into a granny square.

Materials:
Worsted Weight Yarn
Size H (5mm) crochet hook
Tapestry needle
Finished Size:
4' wide

Abbreviations (US Terms)
ch: chain
dc: double crochet
hdc: half double crochet
sc: single crochet
sl: slip
sp: space
st/sts: stitch/stitches

Pattern Notes:
Ch 1 does not count as a stitch
Ch 3 counts as a stitch
For cleaner color changes, work the last stitch before the new color, then pull through the new color on the last yarn over on that stitch.
When working between colors, the strands can be carried underneath each stitch, stranded in the back, or cut and woven in each time. It is a personal preference. If you do not feel comfortable with changing colors the face may be worked in a solid color and the eyes stitched on afterward.
Instructions:
Begin with Color A and make a magic circle or chain 4 and join with a slip stitch to form a ring.
Round 1: ch 1, 8 hdc into the ring, sl st into the top of the first hdc [8 sts]
Round 2: ch 1, 2 hdc into the same stitch.
Color B: 2 hdc into next st.
Color A: 2 hdc in each of the next 4 sts,
Color B: 2 hdc in next st.
Color A: 2 hdc in last st. Join with a sl st in top of first hdc [16 sts]
Round 3: ch 3, dc in same st, 2 dc in next st.
Color B: hdc in next st, 2 hdc in next st,
Color A: 2 hdc in next st, hdc in next, sc in next 2 sts, 2 hdc in next, sc in next 2 sts, 2 hdc in next, hdc in next (this stitch will be worked in a color b stitch as reference)
Color B: 2 hdc in next, hdc in next.
Color A: 2 dc in last st, join with a sl st in top of ch 3 [24 sts]
Round 4: Ch 3, dc in same st, 2 dc in next st, (dc, hdc) in next, 2 hdc in next, hdc in next 4 sts, sc in next 4 sts, (sc, hdc) in next, (hdc, sc) in next, sc in next 4 sts, hdc in next 4 sts, 2 hdc in next, (hdc, dc) in last st. Join with a sl st in top of ch 3 and fasten off.
Granny Square Rounds
Work into the 3rd loop for the first round for a cleaner finish. The 3rd loop is the diagonal bar directly under the back loop.

Round 1: Of the 6 dc on the top of the head in the last round, attach the yarn in the 4th dc (counting from right to left).

Ch 1, sc in same st, sc in next, *hdc in next, (2 dc, ch 2) in next, 2 dc in next, hdc in next, sc in next 4 sts; repeat from * two more times, hdc in next, (2 dc, ch 2) in next, 2 dc in next, hdc in next, sc in last 2 sts. Join with a sl st in top of 1st sc.[40 sts]
Round 2: ch 2, dc in each st around and work (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) into each ch-2 corner space. Join with a sl st in top of ch 3 and fasten off. [56 sts]
