Crochet hook (you may wish to go up one hook size)

Abbreviations (US Terms):

ch: chain

hdc: half double crochet

st: stitch

star st: star stitch

beg star: beginning star

half star: half star

Special Stitches:

Star Stitch: insert the hook into the center of the star and pull up a loop, insert the hook between the last 2 spokes of the star, pull up a loop, insert the hook into the base of the last star spoke, pull up a loop, insert the hook into the next stitch, pull up a loop, insert the hook into the next stitch, pull up a loop (6 loops on the hook) yarn over and pull through all 6 loops, chain 1 to make the star center.

Beginning Star: chain 3, insert hook into 2nd chain from the hook, pull up a loop, insert hook into 3rd chain from the hook, pull up a loop, insert the hook into the next stitch (the stitch at the base of the chain), pull up a loop, insert and pull up loops from the next 2 stitches (6 loops on the hook), yarn over and pull through all 6 loops, chain 1 to make the star center.

Half Star: insert the hook into the center of the star and pull up a loop, insert the hook between the last 2 spokes of the star, pull up a loop, insert the hook into the base of the last star spoke, pull up a loop, insert the hook into the last stitch in the row, pull up a loop, (5 loops on the hook) yarn over and pull through all 5 loops, chain 1 to make the star center.

Instructions:

Chain an odd number of stitches

Foundation Row 1: starting from the 2nd ch from the hook, insert hook and pull up loops from the next 5 chains (6 loops on the hook), yarn over and pull through all 6 loops, chain 1 to make the star center, star st to last ch, half star st in the last ch. Turn.

Foundation Row 2: ch 1, hdc in center of half star, 2hdc in each of the star centers to the last st, hdc in last st (top of turning ch). Turn.

Pattern Repeat:

Row 1: beg star, star st to last st, half star. Turn.

Row 2: ch 1, hdc in center of half star, 2hdc in each of the star centers to the last st, hdc in last st (top of turning ch).

Repeat last 2 rows until desired length
