Crochet Linen Stitch Cat Hat
This free crochet linen stitch cat hat pattern showcases the beautiful and versatile linen stitch. Make them for the whole family with different sizes ranging from toddler to large adult. Size modifications are given at the end of the pattern.
Have fun experimenting with different color combinations of stripes or using gradient yarns for different effects. This is also a great way to use leftover scrap yarns.

Materials:
DK Weight Yarn such as Knit Picks Brava Sport 120(155, 185, 220)yds
Size H 5mm crochet hook for body / 4.5 mm hook for ribbing
Tapestry needle
Scissors
Stitch Marker (optional)
Gauge:
20 stitches / 20 rows = 4 in /10 cm in linen stitch
Finished Sizes:
Sizes are 1-2" less than head size to allow for stretching.
Toddler: 16" circumference / 7" height
Child: 18" circumference / 7.5" height
S/M Adult: 20" circumference / 8.5" height
L/XL Adult: 22" circumference / 9" height
Abbreviations:
blsc: back loop single crochet
ch: chain
rev sl-st: reverse slip stitch
RS: right side
sc: single crochet
sp: space
sl-st: slip stitch
st: stitch
WS: wrong side
Pattern Notes:
Chain 1 space counts as a stitch in final stitch count of rounds.
Pattern is written as Toddler (Child, Adult S/M, Adult L/XL).
Linen Stitch Cat Hat Instructions:
For color pattern shown in photo, change colors every 2 rows after the brim is complete.
Brim:
Begin with brim color and smaller hook size for ribbing.
Ribbing:
Row 1: Ch 9, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Turn. — 8 sts
Rows 2 - 80 (90, 100, 110): ch 1, blsc in each st to end. Turn — 8 sts
Fold the ribbing in half, join the two ends together by slip sttiching the back loop of the last row with the foundation chain row. Turn the brim so the seam is on the inside.
Change to larger hook.
Brim Round: ch 1, sc into the end of each each row of ribbing, join with a sl-st in the first st, switching colors if desired. Do not turn. — 80 [90, 100, 110] sts
Hat Body:
Round 1 (RS): ch 2 (counts as stitch here and throughout), sc in next st, *ch 1, skip next st, sc in next st; repeat from * to end, sl-st in first ch-2 sp to join. Turn. — 80 [90, 100, 110] sts
Round 2 (WS): ch 2, skip next sc, sc in next sp, *ch 1, skip next st, sc in next sp; repeat from * to end, rev sl-st in first ch-2 sp with new color to join. Turn.
Round 3 (RS): ch 2, skip next sc, sc in next sp, *ch 1, skip next st, sc in next sp; repeat from * to end, sl-st in first ch-2 sp with new color to join. Turn.
Round 4 (WS): ch 2, skip next sc, sc in next sp, *ch 1, skip next st, sc in next sp; repeat from * to end, rev sl-st in first ch-2 sp with new color to join. Turn.
Rounds 5 - 28 (30, 36, 38): repeat rounds 3 & 4.
Size Adjustments:
Try the hat on before seaming the top. Rows may be added or removed for a more custom fit.
Finishing:
Fasten off leaving a long tail for sewing. Flatten the hat at the top and seam using the long tail, working from one end to the other. Weave in all ends.
Optional: add embellishments like embroidered whiskers, buttons or an embroidered "X" in the ears.
