Worsted Weight Yarn such as Brava
2 yds / 11 m Color A (applique)
11 yds / 10 m Color B (square)
Size H (5mm) crochet hook
Tapestry needle
Finished Size:
4" / 10cm width for applique
5" / 13cm width for granny square

Cat Granny Square Instructions:
Cat Applique:
Begin with a slip stitch on the hook and ch 4 (counts as dc and beginning ring).
Round 1: work 11 dc in the 4th ch from the hook, join with a sl-st in top of ch 3. – 12 sts
Round 2: ch 3 (counts as dc here and throughout), dc into same st, 2 dc in each st around. Join with a sl-st in top of ch 3. – 24 sts
Round 3: ch 3, 2 dc in next st, *dc in next, 2 dc in next; repeat from * to end of round. Join with a sl-st in top of ch 3. – 36 sts
Round 4 (ears): sk 2, (4 dc, ch 2, 4 dc) in next st, sk 2, sl-st in next 3 sts, sk 2, (4 dc, ch 2, 4 dc) in next st, sk 2, sl-st into next st and fasten off.
To make the granny square:
Round 5: This entire round is worked in the “3rd loop” on the back of each stitch. Join with a new color in the 3rd loop of the stitch where the final slip stitch was made to finish round 4, ch 1, sc in the same st, sc in next 3 sts, hdc in next, dc in next 2 sts, (ch 1, 2dc) in next, dc in next, hdc in next, sc in next 3 sts, hdc in next, dc in next, (2dc, ch 1) in next, dc in next 2 sts, hdc in next, sc in next 4 sts, sl-st in next 4 sts (the side of the cat's ear), ch 1, sl-st in next 4 sts, sc in next 3 sts, sl-st in next 4 sts, ch 1, sl-st in last 4 sts, join with a sl-st in top of beginning sc. – 44 sts, 4 ch-1 corners
Round 6: ch 3 (counts as dc), *dc in the top of each st to next ch-1 sp, (2dc, ch 2, 2dc) in each ch-1 sp; repeat from * three more times, dc to the end. – 60 sts, 4 ch-2 corners
Round 6 may be repeated as many times as needed to increase the size of the square. 16 sts will be added to each round count.
Cut yarn and weave in all ends.
Optional:
Embroider a nose, whiskers or face using scrap yarn.
