Alien Granny Square

This alien granny square is out of this world! Make the first several rounds of the alien face to be used as an applique to add to other projects or turn it into a square for your favorite granny square projects. Find the written instructions as well as a video tutorial.

Materials:
Worsted Weight Yarn
Size H (5mm) crochet hook
Size 4.5mm crochet hook for eyes (optional)
Tapestry needle
Finished Size:
5' wide
Abbreviations (US Terms)
ch: chain
dc: double crochet
hdc: half double crochet
sc: single crochet
sl: slip
sp: space
st/sts: stitch/stitches
Pattern Notes:
Ch 1 does not count as a stitch
Ch 3 counts as a stitch
Alien Granny Square Instructions:
Alien Rounds
Begin with Color A and the larger hook, make a magic circle or chain 4 and join with a slip stitch to form a ring.
Round 1: ch 1, 8 hdc into the ring, sl st into the top of the first hdc. [8 sts]
Round 2: ch 1, 2 hdc into the same stitch and in each stitch to the end, sl-st in the top of the first hdc. [16 sts]
Round 3: ch 3 (counts as dc here and throughout), 2 dc in next st, dc in next, (2 hdc in next, hdc in next) twice, 2 dc in each of the next 2 sts, (hdc in next, 2 hdc in next) twice, dc in next, 2 dc in next, dc in final st, join with a sl-st in top of ch-3. [24 sts]
Round 4: ch 3, dc in next st, 2 dc in next, hdc in next 2 sts, 2 hdc in next, hdc in next 2 sts, (hdc, sc) in next, sc in next 2 sts, (sc, hdc) in next, (hdc, sc) in next, sc in next 2 sts, (sc, hdc) in next, hdc in next 2 sts, 2 hdc in next, hdc in next 2 sts, 2 dc in next, dc in last 2 sts, join with a sl-st in the top of ch-3. [32 sts]
You may leave this as an applique or continue to the granny square rounds. To leave as an applique, skip to the eyes section.
Granny Square Rounds
Work into the 3rd loop for the first round for a cleaner finish. The 3rd loop is the horizontal bar directly under the back loop.

Round 1: Join Color B in the back of the first ch-3 from the last round, ch 1, sc in same st, sc in next, *hdc in next, (2 dc, ch 2) in next, 2 dc in next, hdc in next, sc in next 4 sts; repeat from * two more times, hdc in next, (2 dc, ch 2) in next, 2 dc in next, hdc in next, sc in last 2 sts. Join with a sl st in top of 1st sc.[40 sts]
Round 2: ch 3, dc in each st around and work (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) into each ch-2 corner space. Join with a sl st in top of ch 3 and fasten off. [56 sts]
Eyes:
The eyes may be embroidered on, or you may cut small pieces of felt or fabric to glue or sew onto the face. If you wish to crochet the eyes, use the smaller hook for the next round.
Round 1: ch 2, in the second ch from the hook, work 2 sc, dc, ch 1, dc, 2 sc, ch 1, sl-st in the first sc to join, leave a long tail and fasten off. Using the long tail and a tapestry needle, sew around the edges of the eyes to secure them onto the face.
